Geneva

Exploring Provence

Aix-en-Provence

Annecy

Don’t miss the chance to venture outside your host city and explore the surrounding area. Excursions are offered for all semester, year, and summer programs. You’ll receive a calendar of CEA excursions for your program during orientation.

Geneva

This excursion takes you across the border to the heart of European diplomacy, beginning with a guided tour of the United Nations. Shop for Swiss chocolates and tour a local flea market before visiting the world-famous Jet d’Eau, or water jet, on Lac Leman. Traversing the lake by water taxi, you’ll have the opportunity to experience this well-known landmark up close. End the excursion with a visit to Geneva’s old town and the Art and History Museum, specializing in Swiss and international art and history exhibitions.

Annecy

Get the chance to walk around the beautiful lake of Annecy, the purest lake of Europe and maybe take a swim! This small, picturesque town is worth the journey! You’ll be able to discover the old town and its boutiques, cafés, local restaurants and markets. Take beautiful photos on the Pont des Amours and from the castle of Annecy tower. At the end of the day, enjoy a hot chocolate while admiring the sunset on the lake.

Exploring Provence

The ancient city of Arles— the current capital of photography in France—is known for its Romanesque architecture and resident Vincent Van Gogh. Visit the local market, tour Arles with a guide, and spend the night in a 16th century hotel facing the Roman amphitheater and arena. A morning trip to the Mediterranean coast takes you to Les Saintes Maries de la Mer, where the annual Pelerinage d'Octobre or October pilgrimage celebrates the arrival of the town’s patron saints. The colorful procession dates back to the 12th century, where locals dressed in period costume re-enact the arrival of Les Saintes Maries. Observe this tradition while following the procession to the sea. You’ll have time to explore the village before testing your horseback riding skills along the marshy, windswept coastline.

Aix-en-Provence

Begin your exploration of Aix-en-Provence with a stroll along the famous Cours Mirabeau before wandering through Aix’s bustling Provençal market area. A guided visit of Paul Cézanne’s studio brings you into the workplace of this great painter and renowned Aix citizen. The next day, you’ll visit the Maison Saint Victoire to view an exhibition depicting Aix’s long history, from prehistoric times to the present. Then we’ll head over to Mont Saint Victoire for a leisurely hike and relaxed picnic in the beautiful mountains so often portrayed in Cézanne’s paintings.

Take advantage of the unique flavors of the French Alps. CEA offers a variety of local cultural activities to match your interests. Whether you enjoy music concerts, clubs, sports, cooking classes, language exchanges or something entirely different, our resident staff can help you get involved in the local culture.

University-Sponsored French/International Exchange & Cultural Events

This program connects you with French LEA (Langue étrangères appliquées or Applied Foreign Languages) and LCE (Langue et civilisation étrangère or Foreign Civilization and Language) students through email. You’ll also enjoy organized international meals, dances, and weekend mountain hikes. Supplemental fees may apply.

Wine and Cheese Introduction

This popular event introduces you to a few (among hundreds!) possible combinations of French cheeses and wines. For example, learn which wine best goes with the local “bleu de Vercors” or which cheese goes well with Champagne.

Volunteer Opportunities

Immerse in local culture and language while making a difference in your host community by volunteering! You'll improve your language skills, meet new people, help those less fortunate, and promote goodwill between people of different nationalities and cultures. Volunteer opportunities are offered through a variety of local organizations and associations.

Tea & Talk
The resident staff is happy to welcome you to have tea and talk with you, either to practice your French or just to share a moment together!

Tutoring
Work on your French homework with the resident staff, and take time to review lessons or to improve your French skills!

GEM Student Associations

While CEA CAPA highly recommends that you choose one of our French Alps housing options provided, you also have the option to arrange independent housing. If your ideal housing scenario includes living in a particular neighborhood, having specific amenities or living with a specific person as your roommate, then independent housing could be just the ticket for you.

Use the online housing application form to request permission for this option no later than the application closure date. If your request is approved, you will receive a rebate for your housing payment, however CEA CAPA will not provide you with any assistance setting up independent housing. Keep in mind, rebates are not granted to students who move out of their CEA CAPA housing or choose to pursue independent living arrangements after the application closure date.

Grading

The French grading system is based on a scale of 20, as opposed to 100 in the U.S. system. It would be inaccurate to merely multiply a French grade by a factor of five to find its U.S. equivalent. Grades in France are awarded on a scale of 1-20, but the tradition is such that grades higher than 16 are seldom awarded. The passing grade for a single subject is usually 10/20, although grades of 8 and 9 may indicate satisfactory performance. Grading in France is severe and can vary from one institution to another, and from one course to another.

The Franco-American Commission for Educational Exchange recommends the following comparison of grades:

15 – 16

13 – 14
